Peace Education Center of Teachers College:
PANEL AND WORKSHOPS

From Afganistan to Zimbabwe: Creative Responses to Conflict
On the fifth anniversary of 9/11, Columbia’s Center for International Conflict Resolution at the School for International and Public Affairs will join forces with the Peace Education Center at Teachers College and September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows to challenge the widely held assumption that violence can only be countered with even greater violence. We have the unique opportunity to help break that cycle by learning from the real world experiences of a group of international guests who have experienced violence and developed their own creative, non-violent responses.
Peaceful Tomorrows is an organization of family members of 9/11 victims, who have united to turn their grief into action for peace. This September, during the 5th anniversary, Peaceful Tomorrows will host an international gathering of individuals who have been directly affected by acts of violence in Israel, Palestine, Japan, Indonesia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Algeria, England, Ireland, Spain, Rwanda, Sudan, South Africa, Chile, Colombia, Guatemala, Russia, Italy and the U.S. These global guests have all consciously chosen to reject further violence in response to personal tragedy. The objective of their gathering is to create an international network that will share experiences and initiatives, and create a plan of action for social change.
Please join us on September 11th to hear their tragic and inspiring stories, and to discuss alternative responses to violence.

Date: September 11, 2006
Time: 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM

A facilitator will be provided for each group by the Center for International Conflict Resolution.   We will discuss and identify the common themes of the presenters’ responses to terrorism, violence, and war: What was it that made them react by trying to break the cycle of violence? What were the common challenges they faced in taking their stands? What were the common solutions they identified for ending violence?
