The Bridge to Excellence Partnership
Family Fun and Fitness Day

On Saturday October 22, 2005 the first Family Fun Fitness Day was held at the Ralph Bunche School (PS 125). An incredibly successful gathering of families, children, and school staff took place thanks to the coordinated efforts and resources of numerous community organizations, institutions and school staff.

Several organizations provided a variety of information, and free health screenings and flu shots were offered at no cost to families. Many health and fitness activities were well-attended during the day, including an open swim in the school pool, relay races and salsa class in the gym. Children were dancing to music broadcasting live from the auditorium and all were excited to take part in a balloon animal and magic show. Interactive demonstrations were held and information was available regarding healthy foods, and those who attended sampled a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, and cheeses.

The Family Fun and Fitness Day is one event of several planned for the coming school year which focus on engaging Ralph Bunche School families in a larger community partnership of   education. Planning for the event was based on the needs of the school community, as identified by school families and administration.

Family Fun Fitness Day was made possible by: Harlem Hospital, St. Luke's/Roosevelt Hospital Center, Metro Plus, Community Premier Plus, Power 105.1 FM, NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Food Change, Community Voices, Region 10 NYC Department of Education, Cornell University Cooperative Extension.
